Rosacea is caused by inflammatory mediators that break down collagen and elastin. This leads to a cascading effect of worsening inflammation and redness. Specific triggers can bring on flare-ups or make existing symptoms worse, so it’s important to identify and avoid them. Common triggers include

  • Alcohol
  • Citrus fruit
  • Exercise
  • Extreme weather
  • Hot or spicy foods and beverages
  • Irritating skin care products
  • Stress
  • Strong wind
  • Sun exposure
  • Tomatoes and other nightshades

Symptoms of Rosacea

Initially one may notice blushing or flushing or the skin, but the redness will persist or spread. There are four basic types with unique symptoms.

  • Pre-Rosacea: Persistent blushing of facial and neck skin
  • Vascular Rosacea: Inflammation of blood vessels beneath the skin causing swollen, warm flesh (most common in women)
  • Inflammatory Rosacea: Formation of enlarged blood vessels and acne
  • Rhinophyma: Enlarged nasal oil glands that cause the nose to appear swollen or bulbous and red (most common in men)
  • Eye Symptoms of Rosacea: Redness, inflammation, burning, tearing, or irritation in eye or on eyelid

Treatment for Rosacea

There are a variety of ways to treat rosacea and control flare-ups. Dietary modifications are recommended to avoid triggers like alcohol, caffeine, and spicy food. Regular use of sunscreen with zinc oxide or titanium dioxide is recommended to help prevent the worsening of the condition. Other treatment options include antibiotics, anti-inflammatories, antioxidants, and procedures.

Questions? We can help!

How do I know if I have Rosacea?

Your CCSD Provider will help determine if you have Rosacea. Some signs to look for are: facial redness, flushing, visible blood vessels; acne-like breakouts, usually where the skin is very red; thickening skin with a bumpy texture; ocular rosacea with visible broken blood vessels on an eyelid.

While rosacea cannot be cured, your CCSD Provider can help determine the triggers that flare-up rosacea symptoms and prescribe you products & treatments that can control or eliminate its various signs and symptoms.

While many insurances cover the initial Rosacea dermatology visit and medications, procedures like Excel V and BBL Hero are considered a cosmetic visit. To determine if you're in network and what your insurance covers, contact our Billing Department at 312-245-9965 opt. 5, and they will be happy to assist you!

Dr. Ibrahim is AMAZING. He has such a wonderful ‘bed side manner’ and his experience is multifaceted. I go to him for both regular skin concerns and cosmetic reasons and he has been able to help with every issue I have! He is by far the best dermatologist I have been to and I recommend him 100%
