Dry Skin Rescue Remedies

Our skin becomes susceptible to dryness during the winter months with the combination of freezing cold temperatures and forced air heat. Areas such as the hands, lower legs and lips are often most prone to the ravages of winter because they produce less natural oil. Our dermis provides an armor against the elements and must remain nourished to protect us. When selecting a moisturizer, choose one that is both non-irritating and hydrating. With a unique anti-itch ingredient and sterile delivery system, we recommend the Avène Xeracalm for repairing irritated and dried-out skin to face and body. To soothe and soften dry, cracked lips Avène Cold Cream Lip Balm and Dr. Dan’s Cortibalm are office favorites. Avène Skin Recovery Cream and SkinMedica Replenish Hydrating Cream are rich, emollient facial moisturizers suitable for even the most sensitive skin. Not forgetting our very own CCSD Revive Night Cream containing peptides for added anti-aging benefit. Please remember, if over-the-counter options are not meeting your needs, please seek the advice of one of our CCSD providers. Certain skin conditions such as psoriasis or eczema may require prescription topicals to prevent flares. Call the office today at 312-245-9965 if you would like to discuss your dry skin further!

June is Acne Awareness Month

Top Myths About Acne Acne goes away after high school. Once acne is cleared you can stop all your medications. Acne scars are caused by picking. Spot treating acne pimples is the best way to clear skin. Acne vulgaris affects 80% of the population at some time in their lives. Also known as pimples or zits, it is caused by oil production, plugged pores, and a bacteria that causes inflammation called p.acnes. It is aggravated by hormonal changes, stress, and changes in weather. There are several forms of acne including comedonal acne (black heads and white heads), inflammatory acne (the pink bumps) and nodular acne (large cysts which often scar). Uncontrolled acne can lead to permanent scarring, which is very difficult to treat. Sometimes acne improves with age, but not always. Many people who did not have acne as a teenager can develop it in adulthood as well. There are several ways to get clear skin. Firstly, the pores need to be unplugged. this is usually done with vitamin A creams and gels, known as retinoids. The vitamin A is used once a day, usually at night time, to unplug pores and reduce red bumps. Glycolic acid cleansers and lotions, such as IS Clinical Cleanser, Glytone Lotion, and Vivite Day Lotion can help to clear plugged pores and fade away pink spots that are left over. SilkPeel Microdermabrasions and PCA chemical peels can also lift off dead skin cells, and unplug pores. Secondly, the bacteria causing the inflammation needs to be treated. Several medicines can kill off bacteria, such as benzoyl peroxides and antibiotics. A special Blue Light Treatment can also kill off the acne causing bacteria and can be done in the Dermatologist's office. Thirdly, curbing oil production is sometimes necessary. There are pills and topical gels which help to reduce the oil production on the skin. Dark or pink marks left over after acne can be lightened by SilkPeel Microdermabrasion treatments or PCA peels. These treatments are done on a monthly basis, as the skin cycling process is about 28 days. Most patients can have clear skin in 5-6 months and maintain with a daily topical treatment.

FDA Sunscreen Regulations and Sun Safety

Top 5 Myths About Sunscreens: They completely block out UVA and UVB rays. They are waterproof. They provide "all day" protection. SPF 100 is 4 times SPF 25. Sunscreen prevents you from producing Vitamin D. The FDA has recently created new sunscreen regulations to clarify the confusion with SPFs, labeling, and sun protection. Currently, a sunscreen can claim that it is "broad spectrum" for both UVA ( the aging, deeper penetrating rays) and UVB (the burning rays) without having an appropriately protective UVA ingredient. Now the government will require the sunscreen manufacturers to use a strong enough UVA ingredient if they claim "broad spectrum protection". What does this mean for you? An easier time determining what sunscreen is best for you. What do we recommend? We prefer a broad spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher, and for many patients, one containing zinc oxide. Even these sunscreens are not water proof, they are water resistant. All sunscreens need to be reapplied every 2 hours while out in the sun. The SPF ratings refer to UVB protection only, and the numbers are not linear. Even while you wear sunscreen, you are still getting some sun exposure and will still have Vitamin D production. However, we do recommend Vitamin D supplementation from foods or pharmaceutical grade supplements such as AmeriSciences Osteo. If you haven't had a yearly skin exam, now is the time to visit us to find out your risks of developing skin cancer. Call us at 312-245-9965, and make your appointment today!

Client Reviews

Love love Dr. Ibrahim. He helped me to find a combination that helps with my acne scars due to cystic acne in my teenage year. Just like anything in medicine, good things take time with a good skin care and medical grade products. I continue to see him for Botox concurrently with the acne scar regimen, so l can get a snatch jawline again. He is funny and a knowledgeable. The best compliment I had was when my patient see me every 3 months saw my skin recently and complimented on it. I have found myself not wearing makeup and only using tinted SPF.

— Huong Iodice

Dr. Grushchak is my favorite derm I've been to so far. She is very professional and has great bedside manner. Same thing goes for all the staff. I always see great results after leaving the office. The office itself is very clean and enjoyable to visit. Would definitely recommend.

Thank you to the friendly staff at CCSD for always making my visits pleasant and efficient! An even bigger thank you to Dr. Jacob for the phenomenal job she did all but erasing a scar on my face from skin cancer, and the amazing job she always does defying Mother Nature keeping my face looking young and alert!

— Christopher

Dr. Ibrahim is AMAZING. He has such a wonderful “bed side manner” and his experience is multifaceted. I go to him for both regular skin concerns and cosmetic reasons and he has been able to help with every issue I have! He is by far the best dermatologist I have been to and I recommend him 100%!

— Maddy

I am BEYOND obsessed with this place! From the front door staff, to the medical assistants to wonder women herself (Dr. Jacob) and her amazing counter parts- hands down the most magical experience EVER! Not to mention if you’re going here for cosmetic reasons, Dr. Ibrahim is an absolute MAGICIAN/WIZARD with injectables! My lips are the best on Instagram! I 100000% recommend this place over and over and over again!

— Kelly

I have lines above the bridge of my nose, wanted a more relaxed, rested look. I had a dysport appointment, it was ontime, my nurse asked if I had any concerns.I was a little nervous… Then Dr. Jacob came in, made sure I was comfortable. She asked if I wanted more of an arch in my eyebrow. She said it would really opened my eye area… 4 days later… Full effect…AWESOME results!! Very…

— Gracie

I’ve been seeing Dr. Ibrahim Omer for a few months now for some derm issues (perioral dermatitis, eczema). He instantly identifies the problem and prescribes appropriately. He is also great with taking the time to explain what’s happening, and how to manage the medications and creams once I get home. I’ve never done botox or fillers, but am planning to return for a little boost once my skin heals. The front desk is attentive, and appointments run on time. I’ve never waited more than a few minutes.
