What is Liposuction?
Liposuction is used to slim, reshape and contour specific areas of the body that are resistant to diet and exercise. It is used to remove stubborn pockets of excess fat from almost any area of the body including the abdomen, back and flanks, neck, upper arms, thighs, buttocks and knees, calves and ankles. Double Board-Certified Plastic Surgeon Niki Christopoulos MD, FACS will go over her liposuction technique with you during your consultation and discuss your body contouring goals.
Am I a good candidate for a Liposuction Surgery?
Ideal Candidates for Liposuction are Patients who:
- Are overall healthy and are normal weight to slightly overweight
- Have overall good skin tone and elasticity
- Have realistic body expectations
It is important to remember that liposuction is not a substitute for major weight loss. It is ideal for patients who have stubborn areas of fat deposits and disproportionate body contours that are resistant to normal diet and exercise.
Dr. Niki Christopoulos’ Approach to a Liposuction Procedure
Liposuction is performed through small, inconspicuous incisions hidden in natural skin creases. Dr. Christopoulos then injects a “wetting solution” into the area being treated. This solution contains anesthetic medication as well as medication to help minimize bruising and bleeding.
Dr. Christopoulos is a double-board certified plastic surgeon and performs her surgeries in a fully accredited outpatient surgical facility. Anesthesia is administered by an anesthesiologist using either intravenous sedation or general anesthesia for your comfort and safety during the procedure. The procedure can take anywhere from 1-3 hours, depending on the amount of body area being treated.
Liposuction Recovery and Results
The length of recovery depends on the type of procedure you have performed and the healing process does vary from individual to individual. It is natural to expect some bruising, swelling and numbness after your procedure. Most patients are able to resume daily activities and return to work within a few days. It is important to maintain your healthy diet and exercise regimen during the healing process because substantial weight gain will alter your result.
Dr. Christopoulos will advise you to refrain from strenuous activity for a few weeks after your surgery and will also guide you on the proper type of compression garments that may be necessary to minimize swelling and improve your results.
