June is acne awareness month: How to treat an acne cyst

Acne is one of the most common skin complaints treated at Chicago Cosmetic Surgery and Dermatology. Bothersome blemishes don’t discriminate against age, gender or skin type. They can be debilitating. We talk a lot about the miracle products you can incorporate as part of your daily skin care regimen to maintain and manage acne, but what happens when a huge painful pimple rears its ugly, pus-filled head? You know, the one that ironically emerges days before the most important event of your life, causing you to Google in a blind panic ‘What would Dr. Pimple Popper do?’ When oxygen can easily flow into the follicle, bacteria can’t thrive or cause problems. It's only when you get the perfect storm of a little too much sebum, plus dead skin cells, that you're put on the path to zitsville. Before you descend into a furious state of squeezing, STOP! Dr. Pimple Popper isn’t the only Physician with magical ‘popping’ skills. The easiest way to treat a painful acne cyst is with a quick office visit and a small injection of steroid medication. Call your friendly acne exterminators at CCSD and request an ‘intralesional acne injection’. We can talk products too! Either way you will be well on your way to being acne-free for your big day!

Patch Testing with Whitney Conen PA-C

If you have been suffering from unexplained skin irritation or rash we have the solution! Patch testing is a method used to determine whether a specific substance is causing the allergic inflammation to a patients skin. The first step to recovery is scheduling an appointment for us to assess your rash. If your CCSD provider agrees that the cause of your rash may be allergic contact dermatitis, they will refer you to Whitney for patch testing. On day one of testing, tiny amounts of up to 25 or more substances are applied as small patches to your skin. This is usually on your upper back. They are fixed on with non-allergic tape. After two days you return to the office and the patches are removed. The skin is examined to see if there is a reaction to any of the tested substances. After a further two days the skin is examined by Whitney again, in case you have a delayed reaction to any substance, and a care plan will be designed for you.

Free Skin Cancer Screenings – May 1st

Dr. Carolyn Jacob, as part of Melanoma awareness month and in conjunction with the AAD SPOTme® community initiative, will be providing free mole checks on May 1st between 1:20-3:30pm. When it comes to good skin health, prevention and protection is key. Skin cancer describes an abnormal growth of cells, most often (but not always) found on sun-exposed skin. Skin cancer can all affect all race and ethnicities with melanoma being the deadliest diagnosis. A top tip from our physicians: “Look for the ugly duckling” and learn your ABCDE warning signs to promote early diagnosis and treatment. Use a sunscreen that protects the skin against both UVA and UVB rays with an SPF of at least 30. Reapply every two hours, especially after swimming or sweating. Don’t use tanning beds - just like the sun, UV light from tanning beds can cause wrinkling, age spots and can lead to skin cancer. If you don’t manage to schedule a free screening we are pleased to announced our experienced and certified Physician Assistant, Whitney Conen, is scheduling Full Body Mole Exams from April 1st. These visits can be billed to insurance or self-pay. Take the first step toward healthy skin and call 312-245-9965 today!

April is Rosacea Awareness Month

The National Rosacea Society (NRS) designates April as Rosacea Awareness Month to educate the public on the impact of this chronic and widespread facial disorder estimated to affect more than 16 million Americans. Often observed as redness on the cheeks, nose, chin or forehead that may come and go, the earliest signs of rosacea are often overlooked because people assume they are temporary and will go away. Without medical treatment the effects of rosacea can become increasingly severe. Common symptoms include blushing and flushing, persistent redness, bumps and pimples, visible blood vessels, eye irritation, burning or stinging, a dry appearance, plaques, skin thickening, swelling. Beyond the face, rosacea develops most commonly on the neck, chest, scalp or ears.

Dr. Ibrahim is AMAZING. He has such a wonderful “bed side manner” and his experience is multifaceted. I go to him for both regular skin concerns and cosmetic reasons and he has been able to help with every issue I have! He is by far the best dermatologist I have been to and I recommend him 100%!
