What is UPF Clothing?

For all our sun-safe patients this is an excellent question! Clothing is our first line of defense against damage from the sun, absorbing or blocking much of the harmful radiation. The more skin you cover, the better you are protected. UPF stands for Ultraviolet Protection Factor and indicates what fraction of the sun’s ultraviolet rays can penetrate fabric. A shirt with a UPF of 50, allows just 1/50th of the sun’s UV radiation to reach the skin. UPF is a rating used for clothing, whereas SPF stands for Sun Protection Factor and applies to sunscreens or other cosmetic skin care products. Join the Sunscreen Scene

Sunscreen helps to protect your skin from sunburn, early skin aging and skin cancer. The American Academy of Dermatology recommends everyone use sunscreen offering Broad-spectrum protection (protects against UVA and UVB rays), an SPF 30 or higher and with water resistance. When dealing with reapplication, the FDA requirement for label directions is to reapply every two hours and immediately after swimming or sweating. However, everyone should be aware that redness is not a sign to reapply sunscreen, but rather to to get out of the sun. If the skin is red at the time of reapplying, this is a sign your skin is already burning. In addition to wearing sunscreen, dermatologists recommend taking the following steps to protect your skin and find skin cancer early: - Seek shade - One shot glass amount (1oz) of sunscreen will cover your entire body - Wear protective clothing - Use extra caution near water, snow and sand - Get vitamin D safely through a healthy diet - Avoid tanning beds - Check your birthday suit on your birthday with a board-certified CCSD provider!

Defend, Catch & Take Action! How to be a Skin Cancer Hero

May is skin cancer awareness month. According to the Skin Cancer Foundation, there are over 5 million diagnosed cases of skin cancer in the United States each year. This makes skin cancer one of the most commonly diagnosed forms of cancer, fortunately it is also one of the most preventable and treatable. About 90% of non-melanoma skin cancers and 85% of melanoma cases are associated with exposure to ultraviolet radiation from the sun. By raising awareness of the dangers of unprotected exposure and encouraging sun-safe habits, we can change behaviors and save lives. Chicago Cosmetic Surgery and Dermatology, in association with the AAD’s SPOTMe campaign, will be running free full body mole checks on Monday, May 7th, Thursday, May 17th and Monday May 21st. In addition to running these free mole check clinics, our staff will be participating in Miles for Melanoma on Saturday, June 2nd at Diversey Harbor.
